Music Decatur County Fair Special Dining Experiences Church
Several times a year small bands or singers are invited to perform, providing residents the opportunity to enjoy the music by dancing or simply listening. The Red Barn Gang and the Swinging Seniors perform quite often. John J. is a favorite local singer who often sings the "Auctioneer Song" by resident request. Myrna J. rocks the piano with "Oldies" in a Sing-Along music activity once a week.
Holidays and Special Events
Throughout the year Grade School children come in to parade their Halloween costumes, sing Christmas songs and deliver May baskets. Girl Scouts and 4-H Clubs provide table decorations. High School groups give dramatic orations, sing and dance, perform instrumental music and parade prom gowns and tuxes. Cedar Living Center holds an Easter egg hunt for youngsters in Spring, and a Trick or Treat evening in Fall. These activities bring in children ages 0 to 14, and create the opportunity to experience the wonder of touching a baby, or the smile of a bashful 2 year old. To celebrate the holidays with family and friends a potluck dinner is held at Thanksgiving and an afternoon party is planned for Christmas time.
Games and Fun
Volunteers come in to play Bingo weekly. A group of residents mixes and bakes cookies once a week while reminiscing about days gone by. One available activity is assembling jigsaw puzzles. Another is playing cards or dominoes. Some residents enjoy the Wii bowling game.
Keeping Up With the News
It's important for everyone to keep up with what's going on in the world. Activities Director Teresa Shaughnessy reads the local news in the Oberlin Herald and shares items of interest from The Salina Journal and the Capper's Weekly so residents can stay current with national news.
During Fair week in August, some residents visit Decatur County Fair. Most ride the train and view the farm animal exhibits. This is a prime opportunity for residents to look at blue ribbon winners at the exhibitions.
Often special dinners or lunches are planned which involve community members, family members and/or DHS staff members from various areas in our facility. Potluck dinners, order-in pizza meals, pancake sausage suppers, sweetheart luncheons and barbeque picnics are regularly planned events.
At least once a month a "Resident's Choice" meal is served. The Resident's Council selects their favorite food choices that are put on the month's menu. Inevitably this meal is a raving success! Once a month Dennis B., with the Forget-Me-Nots, arranges a small specially prepared dinner with 4 or 5 resident guests in the privacy of the patio area. At our Christmas and Thanksgiving parties CLC is brimming with festivity when family members come to dine with their resident.
Local churches hold church services every Sunday afternoon. Catholic mass is held once a week. Residents are encouraged to celebrate the sacraments of their own religious belief. Local ministers give Communion to those residents who wish to partake.
