  • Sympathy is extended to the family of Ardith Wayne who passed away at Cedar Living Center on July 26.

Our craft projects are nearly completed and it looks like we will be ready in time for the Decatur County Fair.  We have opted once again to display our work, but we will not have it judged for ribbons or premium money.  Please take a minute to stop by the open class building at the fair grounds to see what our residents have accomplished.

    • Friday was the last day of our week long celebration so we went all out.  John Juenemann gave us a special concert.  After the music ended we enlisted John’s help and put him to work as an auctioneer.  Staff members donated a variety of items for residents to bid on, including jewelry, snack foods, stuffed animals, wall decorations, and socks.  Residents earned points over the past two weeks by attending activities and by participating in special events, such as wear a hat day.  These points were traded for scrip money which could be used at the auction.  Marsha Morford volunteered as our auction clerk.  There were bidding wars on a few of the popular items, but everyone went home with something.  The dietary department provided fruit smoothies for a special treat.
    • Dietary employee Erin Jeffrey was one of the students who stopped by before prom on Saturday night.  It is always a special treat to see everyone dressed up for prom.

    • April 18 – 24 is National Volunteer Week.  This is a great opportunity to thank the many people who provide volunteer services for the residents of Cedar Living Center throughout the year.  We have volunteers who come faithfully every week to help with a game, play the piano, give a Bible study lesson, or serve coffee.  Other volunteers come less frequently to help with a birthday party, assist with a church service, sing with a group, or donate fresh vegetables from the garden.  Each and every one of these acts of kindness is appreciated.
    • The craft group was busy on Monday afternoon working decorations for spring.  The crafters have also started working on May baskets.
    • Mary Ann Amack led the sing-along time before supper on Monday.
    • Linda Shuler won the first bingo on Tuesday afternoon.  Linda also tied with Fern Wenger to win the blackout game.
    • Residents gathered on Wednesday afternoon to watch a movie.  Everyone enjoyed snacks during the movie.
    • Stuart Euhus gave the Bible study lesson on Wednesday afternoon.
    • Fr. Mark Berland brought Communion for the Catholic residents on Thursday morning.
    • The dietary department hosted a special lunch for residents at noon on Thursday.  They served chicken from Raye’s Grocery and a salad bar.  This menu was selected by the Residents’ Council at their last meeting.
    • Dale Butler, Darlene Fisher, Irene Fringer, Donna Kent, Ira and Mary Kolsky, Jim Plotts, Agnes Pruitt, Linda Shuler, and Ardith Wayne joined in on the bowling game played in the dining room on Thursday afternoon.  Several residents met to play Monopoly on Thursday evening.
    • The baking group made coconut cookies on Friday afternoon.  The cookies disappeared quickly.

From the Oberlin Herald March 22, 2010

    • The residents of Cedar Living Center will host the annual Easter Egg Hunt on Tuesday, March 30, in the Cedar Living Center dining room at 7 p.m.  We would encourage area children to attend this fun event.  Each child should bring a small basket.  It is important to be on time as the hunt does not last long. Everyone is welcome to attend.
    • Myrna Jones hosted the sing-along time on Monday afternoon before supper.
    • Wilma May won the first bingo on Tuesday afternoon and Wilma LaSalle won the blackout game.
    • The Aquarius Club hosted the March birthday party at Cedar Living Center after bingo on Tuesday afternoon.  Those being honored with March birthdays were Joan Noble, Marian Miller, Alvina Gamblin, and Wilma Bobinmyer.  Each received a small gift from the club.  Club members Megan Rippe and Deb Portschy served mini cheese cakes.  Musical entertainment was provided by Phil Law on the trumpet.
    • Rick Doeden hosted a karaoke night in the Cedar Living Center dining room on Tuesday.  Rick, Stan Miller, and Nora Urban took turn singing.  Ira Kolsky was the only resident brave enough to try a song.  Residents and guests enjoyed this fun evening, which included a wide variety of music.
    • Everyone was Irish at Cedar Living Center on St. Patrick’s Day.  The dining room was decorated with lots of shamrocks.  The dietary department served up corn beef and cabbage at noon.  Charlotte Kurtz served up some green treats at a St. Patrick’s Day party in the afternoon.  Myrna Jones helped to make the afternoon extra special with a few Irish tunes.
    • Alvina Gamblin celebrated her March 17 birthday with family members on Wednesday.
    • Stuart Euhus gave the Bible study lesson on Wednesday afternoon.
    • Fr. Mark Berland brought Communion for the Catholic residents on Thursday morning.
    • Residents took advantage of the spring like weather on Thursday afternoon by sitting outside in the sunshine.  The game scheduled for the afternoon was cancelled in favor of enjoying the warm day.  Rumor has it that a few people may have even fallen asleep in the sun.
    • Friday afternoon was a good time to stay inside and bake up a batch of banana chocolate chip cookies.  They were a big hit with the crowd gathered in the dining room.
    • Wilma Bobinmyer was the guest of honor at a birthday celebration held at noon on Sunday.  The Bobinmyer family served cake to all of the residents.

    Everyone is welcome to attend.

CLC News from the Oberlin Herald

    March 15, 2010

    • Everyone enjoys having the occasional snack and the residents at Cedar Living Center are no exception.  The dietary staff members do a good job of making sure that our pantry area is stocked with juice, crackers, cheese, bread, milk, and other essestials so we are always prepared when someone gets hungry.  They also send out a snack cart several times during the week.  The cart is loaded with fresh fruit, jello, pudding, cookies, potato chips, soda pop, a variety of crackers, and much more.  Needless to say, the cart is a big hit with the residents and they look forward to seeing it parked in the hall.  The cart is often used to serve refreshments after a game or other activity.

    • Monday afternoon residents enjoyed a game of Name That Tune.  The snack cart passed around the group following the game.

Mary Ann Amack assisted with the sing-along time before supper on Monday.

    • Fern Wenger and Edna Mott tied for the first bingo on Tuesday afternoon.  The blackout game also ended in a tie between Donna Kent and Delores Wheeler.

    • Pastor Charlotte Strecker-Baseler of the Faith Lutheran Church gave the monthly Communion service on the Cedar Living Center patio Tuesday afternoon.

    • The craft group met on Wednesday afternoon to make shamrock decorations for St. Patrick’s Day.

    • Stuart Euhus gave the Bible study lesson on Wednesday afternoon.

Fr. Mark Berland had Mass for the Catholic residents on Thursday morning.

    • There were several winners at the penny card game on Thursday afternoon.  Players included Darlene Fisher, Dale Butler, Irene Fringer, Elsie Goodnight, Donna Kent, Edna Mott, Joan Noble, Jim Plotts, Agnes Pruitt, Mary Votapka, Delores Wheeler, and Gene Files.  Elsie Goodnight served ice cream bars after the game on Thursday.  She bought the bars with the pennies she had been saving from her past winning hands.

    • Several residents met for a game of Monopoly on Thursday evening.

    • The baking group made butterscotch chip cookies on Friday afternoon.  There was a hungry crowd ready to eat the fresh baked cookies.

    • Edna Mott hosted her knitting club meeting on Saturday afternoon at Cedar Living Center.
